Amid a tidal wave of Independence celebrations this week, an institution which has been helping delinquent boys for 65 years forge productive career paths, is telling a part of its story that should bring joy to every Saint Lucian celebrating their nation’s 46th Anniversary of Independence.

Dogged by negative perceptions over the past years the Boys Training Centre (BTC), which serves as a home for troubled boys, has been highlighting some of its success stories unknown to the majority of Saint Lucians.

Leanna Wallace who manages the BTC, while determined to help delinquent young males forge productive career paths, is equally resolute in proclaiming how the institution has positively impacted countless young males as well.

Wallace asserts that the BTC plays a crucial role in shaping young lives by educating them and equipping them with vocational skills training to become productive citizens.

But more than that is the success stories associated with the BTC that many are unaware of.

“We do not hear about the boys who went to the Boys Training Centre and now own their welding shops,” Wallace said.

she recently shared an inspiring story of a former ward who returned to BTC to give back, proudly stating, “That’s where he learned to weld, and he now has a shop working for several hotels around Saint Lucia.”

She added, “We do not hear about the carpenters, the police officers, and the business owners who emerged from the BTC, and there are many.”

For over six decades, the BTC has served as a sanctuary for young men in need, delivering essential guidance, education, and rehabilitation for juvenile offenders and those requiring care and protection due to abuse, neglect, or abandonment.

Wallace says it is time to shift the narrative and recognize the success stories of those who have thrived after their time at the BTC.

The BTC this week celebrated its 65th years as an institution resilient and committed to empowering and transforming lives for a better future.

The celebrations included a series of engaging activities to involve the community, foster partnerships, and highlight the BTC’s significant contributions to the community over the years.

These events are geared to raise awareness, strengthen collaborations, and reshape public perceptions of the BTC’s essential role in transforming lives.

“We are committed to celebrating our achievements grandly,” Wallace declared.
