Seven football coaches affiliated to the Saint Lucia Football Association Inc. (SLFA), successfully conducted a ‘Train the Trainers’ programme earlier this month.
The training course was conducted by five CONCACAF coaching instructors.
The programme was designed to develop the skills of the local technical officials. They were engaged in an intensive three-day training session, arming themselves with the essential knowledge and skills necessary to become certified coach instructors and lead coaching courses in Saint Lucia.
The C’ License course is a standout among the 40-plus member CONCACAF affiliates.
Andre Waugh, CONCACAF CEO Development Manager, stated that the ‘Train the Trainer’ initiative was launched in 2017 as the “Flagship Programme” within the technical development unit.
“This initiative embodies the vision of Concacaf President Victor Montagliani-to prioritize football and create impactful opportunities for those dedicated to the game,” he declared.
Waugh highlighted that this session is part of a broader CONCACAF Coaching Convention programme that recognises the coaching education efforts, diplomas, and licenses issued across our 41-member associations, facilitating recognition and qualification beyond borders.
In response to the ongoing challenge of inadequate quality qualifications in the region, FIFA, in collaboration with CONCACAF, initiated the ‘Train the Trainers’ programme. This course is vital for enhancing the competencies of coach trainers, significantly influencing the development of football on the island.
FIFA’s Regional Technical Consultant for Global Development, Lenny Lake, asserted that the participants are a pivotal group capable of transforming Saint Lucia football and achieving the goal of qualifying for the final round of a FIFA World Cup.
“This will only happen if we have key individuals making substantial contributions. You are not just changing the game; you are shaping a generation—not only of players but of leaders,” he emphasised.
SLFA President Lyndon Cooper called on the coaches to ensure their acquired knowledge is disseminated to other instructors. “You have a responsibility to ensure that everything you learn is effectively passed on to your participants, who will develop best practices to elevate the sport of football,” he emphasised.
Throughout the series of sessions, participants sharpened their expertise and coaching techniques, which are critical for the growth and sustainability of football in Saint Lucia.
Moreover, the programme incorporates tactical development on the pitch, focusing on coaching philosophies and enhancing man-management skills.
Commenting on this significant initiative, SLFA Technical Director Ces Podd stated that the training course will empower Saint Lucian coaches to cultivate a higher standard of coaching within the country. He noted that these individuals have been collaborating with the SLFA for some time to advance this coaching programme effectively.
