A daring gun attack on Monday afternoon in the city, near four bus stands, damaged two parked automobiles with stray bullets and caused the intended targets to run for their lives.
Law authorities quickly roped off an area near the Babonneau, Bisee, Monchy and Gros Islet Bus Stands in Castries, across from Kenty’s Liquor and Beverage Retail outlet on the lower end of the CDC shopping complex, to conduct a thorough investigation while keeping curious bystanders at bay.
Eyewitnesses stated that a car drove through the area just after lunchtime, firing a hail of bullets at a group of individuals. The gunshots fired prompted people to flee for shelter.
The event left shopkeepers and passersby clearly disturbed and alarmed. One female business owner recalled sprinting outside after hearing gunfire, only to find her vehicle riddled with bullet holes, including two in the front, one in the windscreen, one in a side window, and another in a side mirror.
She expressed her anger, blaming these reckless ‘young hooligans’ for endangering the livelihoods of hard-working people. “I could have been in the vehicle and dead now. I did not put myself in this position for my car to be shot up like that. I am not involved in anything with anyone. They don’t care who they hurt or what they destroy,” she explained.
Condemning rampant lawlessness, she underlined that it is “too much” to bear and urged the youth to stop the bloodshed. “Resolve issues differently. Why all the killings and shootings? People don’t communicate anymore; they don’t resolve matters amicably. They shoot at each other, endangering bystanders and damaging property. “What’s coming on?” she bemoaned.
While there were no casualties in the recent event, the distraught owner of one of the damaged automobiles stated that enough was enough.
Meanwhile, police have arrested and accused Bonnie James, 42, of Marigot, of causing the death of Maximin John, 58, following a wounding incident in China Town, Marigot, earlier this year.
According to reports, on January 27, police officers arrived at the crime scene and discovered John suffering from critical injuries. He was then taken to the Owen King European Union Hospital (OKEU) for treatment, but he died tragically from his injuries on February 6.
James is scheduled to appear in court for bail hearings.
