Law enforcement officials have pledged to implement new, stronger methods in January 2025 to continue efforts to combat the country’s increasing crime rate well after the holiday season.

The adage “Crime-fighting is everyone’s business, how are you helping to maintain law and order” was the main talking point at a recent meeting that brought together prominent members of the business community and the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force (RSLPF).

The Ministry of Commerce convened this crucial meeting to address the epidemic of criminal activities in the country.

The Central Division’s Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Luke Defreitas highlighted that the conference addressed critical issues pertaining to crime, and that come next month, the RSLPF will launch new policies and plans to effectively address the growing crime problem.

Major subjects discussed, according to Defreitas, included intelligence-led policing, establishing a data management system, traffic unit reinforcement, and a unified narcotic and gangs’ unit.

“We are analysing trends and modernising our approach to crime detection, with a strong focus on preventive measures, which are crucial,” asserted ACP Defreitas, the RSLPF’s Crime Chief.

There was a noticeable air of worry regarding the future of crime among those at the meeting, who were mainly company owners, and their worries about safety were particularly strong now that the holiday season is here.

According to Defreitas, the RSLPF is working on a “long-term view” of crime management that extends beyond the holiday season. “Our approach to managing crime in this country aims to establish a permanent solution not just a seasonal fix,” he said.

Ross Gardener, President of the St. Lucia Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture, expressed satisfaction with the insightful strategies presented by law enforcement.

“The Commissioner of Police outlined several actionable plans and initiatives that have already been implemented,” he stated following the forum.

Gardener noted that over the past three months, the RSLPF has successfully implemented these strategies, leading to promising statistics that reflect a proactive stance in utilizing data for informed decision-making.

“We are encouraged by this fresh approach and appreciate the heightened attention to this pressing issue. Our gratitude also extends to the Ministry of Commerce for orchestrating this vital engagement, and we anticipate its regular continuation between the private sector and the Commissioner of Police and his team,” he added.

Gardener acknowledged one of the critical concerns raised: “The safety of staff during this peak season is paramount. We must ensure that employees traveling home late after overtime can do so without fear.”
