As host communities of Jounen Kwéyòl 2024 prepare to roll out their welcome mats for the thousands of people expected to visit them, the Ministry of Health has taken the opportunity to issue food safety guidelines for tomorrow’s festivities.
The Ministry also calls on the host communities, namely Dennery, Mon Repos and Anse La Raye to adhere to the guidelines for food vendors and handlers to ensure a safe and healthy celebration for all.
“Recognising the critical importance of food safety during the upcoming Jounen Kwéyòl festivities, the Ministry of Health, Wellness & Elderly Affairs is committed to preventing foodborne illnesses and safeguarding public health through strict food safety protocols. The Ministry has outlined clear guidelines for food vendors and handlers, emphasising proper temperature control, separation of raw and cooked foods, and rigorous hygiene practices to ensure a safe and enjoyable event for all,” explained a statement from the Ministry on Thursday.
“Ensuring food safety during Jounen Kwéyòl is paramount. We are advising vendors to use adequate hot holding equipment such as stenos, coal pots, and warmers, and cold holding equipment like coolers and chillers to keep food at the correct temperatures for the duration of the event. This is critical to avoid the risk of foodborne illness,” Environmental Health Officer, Sherma Toussaint stated.
The Ministry further advises all food handlers to be vigilant about cross-contamination, especially when dealing with raw meats, seafood, and ready-to-eat foods, and that separate utensils, cutting boards, and grills should be used to prevent any potential health risks.
“The Ministry is also encouraging food vendors to practice proper handwashing, wear clean clothing and hair coverings, and ensure that food is displayed and stored in a manner that protects it from contamination. These simple yet essential practices can make a significant difference in maintaining food safety,” Toussaint said.
As the public prepares to enjoy Jounen Kwéyòl, the Ministry of Health, Wellness & Elderly Affairs calls for continuous adherence to these guidelines to ensure a safe and healthy celebration for all.
The Ministry says it will continue its collaboration with local organising committees to monitor food safety practices during the festivities.
