THE Ministry of Health, Wellness, and Elderly Affairs on Wednesday joined the global community in observing World No Alcohol Day which is recognised by the World Health Organization.

The move was aimed at raising awareness about the negative health impacts of alcohol consumption, particularly its misuse and abuse while promoting healthier habits for individuals and communities alike.

In Saint Lucia, alcohol consumption is a widespread cultural practice, often introduced at a young age and continuing through various life stages. Unfortunately, this leads to significant health and social challenges.

According to Wang Sonson, Deputy Coordinator of the Substance Abuse Advisory Council Secretariat, “The misuse of alcohol is linked to a range of chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and cancers, as well as mental health disorders. These health problems place a heavy financial burden on households and significantly strain our healthcare system. Addressing alcohol abuse is not just a matter of personal health, but a critical factor in Saint Lucia’s development, as these issues have a direct impact on national resources and well-being,” Sonson emphasised.

Alcohol abuse is often associated with domestic violence, crime, and road accidents, which create significant challenges to public safety and community development. Recognising the importance of addressing these problems, the Ministry is committed to promoting an environment that fosters responsibility and moderation.

“We must all take a moment to reflect on our alcohol consumption and the choices we make for ourselves and those around us. By observing World No Alcohol Day, we are sending a clear message about the importance of prioritising health and wellness. This day is a powerful opportunity for us to educate ourselves and others on the risks associated with alcohol abuse, and to advocate for healthier, more responsible behaviours,” explained Deputy Coordinator of the Substance Abuse Advisory Council Secretariat, Wang Sonson.

The Ministry of Health, Wellness, and Elderly Affairs calls all Saint Lucians to join this movement toward a healthier society. World No Alcohol Day 2024 represented a commitment to reducing alcohol-related harm and creating a safer, more supportive environment for all. The future of Saint Lucia depends on the actions we take today.
