Letters & Opinion

Things that simply amaze me!

I often wonder why the opposition or Government-in-waiting seem to always have issues with everything development-wise that the existing Government does.

I would have thought that any project that is worthwhile should be considered as a “plus”, on the basis that whatever has been done positively by any sitting government will be in the interest of the next one elected after they become seated.

But the oppositions (all of them, regardless which party) always seem to forget that they were in Government previously and a lot of what is done presently could have been conceptualized by them and therefore would have gotten all the credits and the kudos and acknowledgements that goes with it. But again, it seems that nothing “the other side” does is ever good enough.

I also wonder why we are considered the Cultural Haven of the Eastern Caribbean and yet there is an absence of facilities and opportunities to evolve and develop the art forms for the greater good of all involved.

I also wonder why the Calypso art form that is such a dominant art form, can exist without its own management structure and don’t care if there is no association to direct or guide its course.

I ask myself why it is only at Carnival time we worry about patrons’ behaviour.

I wonder why the news is always about murders and criminals behaviour and never about progressive topics.

Why can’t we adjust to cleanliness, or city rules and driving codes?

What has made us so disruptive, defiant and so anti-progress?

I love this country, but I also worry about trends and attitudes of the common man and woman. Is it always about having negative habits, or always being high on something?

We’re wearing our trousers below waist-high, or dress in skimpy attire — I often wonder why we are as we are, what makes us tick, what and how we became influenced in such negative ways.

Can’t we not see the positive in anything? Can we not have a long-term positive plan for growth that both parties can latch on too?

Is change never about better and always has to have a rough cutting edge?

In my life, I worry about all these things and question just why we are as we choose to be.

Some may feel and even suggest there needs to be “a guide book for living”, even though nobody reads anymore and all the intellectuals on our island refuse to discuss international issues that affect us all.
