On Monday, an inaugural ceremony welcomed 80 new recruits to the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force (RSLPF), marking the launch of its 38th training programme.

Over the past six months, these recruits underwent rigorous training, acquiring modernised policing techniques to become valiant protectors of the community. Commissioner of Police Crusita Descartes-Pelius emphasised the significance of these training programmes in enhancing Saint Lucia’s human resources. The commitment to creating a safer and more secure Saint Lucia is reflected in the provision of quality, modernised training for the participants.

COP Descartes-Pelius stated, ‘By investing in new recruits and their training, we demonstrate our commitment to a safer Saint Lucia.’

The training programme not only aims to increase the number of officers but also equips them with advanced skills and knowledge. This includes modern police techniques, community policing strategies, and the latest advancements in crime prevention technology. Commissioner Descartes-Pelius added, ‘Our goal is to prepare a new generation of police officers who can effectively handle the complexities of contemporary law enforcement and address unique community challenges.’

Minister for Home Affairs and Crime Prevention Jeremiah Norbert stressed core values, urging recruits to embody professionalism and integrity. As a former police officer himself, Norbert highlighted that policing provides a strong foundation for personal development, encouraging officers to go above and beyond. He declared, “What policing instills in you (is that) it gives you that type of foundation, that stepping stone to become whatever you want in this world.”

Added Norbert: “Policing has become more complicated …more sophisticated and more complex. It requires a holistic development, it requires a fully-trained police officer.”

Prime Minister Philip J Pierre addressed the new officers, emphasizing the importance of exercising power impartially while upholding integrity. He cautioned against negative influences in society and described the recruits as ‘special people’ who met the job requirements. The National Security Minister advised, ‘You have a lot of power; use it wisely.’

These dedicated individuals have undergone grueling yet robust training, meticulously designed to shape them into exemplary officers.
