As we gear up for the exciting ICC Men’s T20 World Cup cricket and the carnival season in St. Lucia, the Substance Abuse Advisory Council Secretariat take this opportunity to remind everyone about the dangers of excessive alcohol consumption. During festive periods, it is natural for persons to want to let loose and have a good time. It is even more important to keep in mind that there is a life after these seasons.
Let’s make choices that work in our favour and in the favour of our loved ones and fellow Citizens. Taking responsible informed actions will help us significantly reduce the chances of problems in both the short and long term.
Excessive alcohol consumption can lead to a number of negative consequences, including impaired judgment, increased risk of accidents and avoidable injuries, and even alcohol poisoning. It can contribute to poor decision making which in some instances can have very serious harmful effects on the one doing the excessive drinking and others as well.
So ,as you celebrate and enjoy, please remember to pace yourself, drink water between each drink containing alcohol, and ensure drinking is never done on an empty stomach. Look out for your friends, for your loved ones and other patrons of the festivities.
As adults, we must also remember to protect our minors by not serving alcohol to them. Never offer or encourage children to consume alcohol, neither to purchase on behalf of an adult. You should not feel afraid or hesitate to seek help if you or someone you know is struggling with alcohol.
Let’s each do our part to make the upcoming seasons of fun and celebration safe and enjoyable for everyone. The Ministry of Health, Wellness and Elderly Affairs wishes everyone a wonderful, yet safe time, celebrating!
