Law enforcement officers in Saint Lucia are actively working to remove illegal firearms from the streets. According to Acting Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Luke Defreitas, there have been 40 homicides in the country so far this year, resulting in 11 individuals facing charges related to these incidents. Some of the ongoing homicide cases are in advanced stages of investigation, and additional charges are expected to be filed soon.

One of the individuals charged is Junior Gabriel, also known as “Coconut,” in connection with the death of Evitus Lynch. Lynch was one of two men fatally shot on Marchand Road earlier this month. ACP Defreitas stressed the importance of public support in combating crime. The Crime Hotline of the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force (RSLPF) remains active, and he urged the public to provide critical assistance in approaching and investigating these cases.

While the police have made progress in seizing illegal firearms and ammunition, ACP Defreitas emphasized the need for more information and public cooperation to further enhance their efforts. He stated, ‘We continue to urge the public for that assistance, which is very critical in our approach and investigation strategies when dealing with these homicide cases.’ Additionally, he expressed satisfaction with their progress but believes that with additional support from the public, they can better address the issue of illegal firearms on the streets.
