THE Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan) recently handed over two separate batches of wheelchairs, steel folding commode chairs and single-arm walkers to two Government Ministries.
The ambulatory devices – which come in sizes that cater to adults and children – were donated by the Cao Zhong Zhi Foundation, a Taiwanese non-governmental organization (NGO). To maximize the impact of these charity goods, following the consultation between Taiwanese and Saint Lucian government authorities, it was agreed to deliver two batches of wheelchairs and assistive devices to Ministry of Health, Wellness and Elderly Affairs as well as Ministry of Equity, Social Justice and Empowerment respectively.
On Tuesday, March 5, 2024, items were handed over to the Ministry of Health, Wellness and Elderly Affairs. This donation was preceded by another one in March 2023. However, H.E. Peter Chia-Yen Chen, Taiwan’s Ambassador to Saint Lucia, said that following last year’s handover and having witnessed first-hand how the devices improved people’s lives and elevated their mobility and dignity, a high demand existed for more devices.
“I believe the impact of this donation is not only an expression of our shared humanity and compassion, but also once again enhances the people-to-people connectivity between Taiwan and Saint Lucia,” said Ambassador Chen at the ceremony.
Hon. Moses Jn. Baptiste, Minister for Health, Wellness and Elderly Affairs, said the significance of the donated devices extends beyond mere material aid, and is symbolic of Taiwan’s unwavering support that will undoubtedly make a profound impact on the lives of many Saint Lucians.
“The Ministry of Health, Wellness and Elderly Affairs wholeheartedly recognizes and expresses thanks to the Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan) for their steadfast dedication to our shared vision of advancing health and well-being,” said Hon. Jn. Baptiste. “Your benevolent gesture underscores the enduring strength of the friendship between our two nations.”
Not only are the items important tools of mobility, said Hon. Minister Jn. Baptiste, but they also significantly enhance the independence for those who need them, and play a pivotal role in elevating the overall quality of life. He also said the Ministry will ensure the judicious distribution of the items, thus ensuring that they reach those who stand to benefit most.
Then, on Tuesday, March 12, 2024, Ambassador Chen handed over similar items to Hon. Joachim Henry, Minister for Equity, Social Justice and Empowerment. This donation will benefit people seeking social support and security.
“Taiwan is always proud to be part of Saint Lucia Government’s endeavours in social intervention,” said Ambassador Chen. “I believe, today’s donation will empower individuals to navigate their lives with confidence and self-respect, and also highlight the solid partnership between Taiwan and Saint Lucia in social transformation.”
Meanwhile, Hon. Minister Henry thanked Ambassador Chen for the generous donation while referencing last year’s donation of a container of wheelchairs. He noted that Government remains committed to ensuring social inclusion for all citizens.
“Today we have additional supplies which are in demand,” Hon. Minister Henry said. “We cannot stop helping people who are not mobile. The Prime Minister has seen it fit to create a desk within his Ministry and now we have Hon. Jeremiah Norbert responsible for persons with disabilities. That accentuates the fact as to how serious we take this issue of persons who are differently-abled and to provide the means and support for them to be able to participate in livelihoods for them, in the social upbringing of their children and family, and to feel included in the business of Saint Lucia.”
