The Mayor and body of Councillors are responsible for the upkeep of the constituencies of Castries Central, Castries North, Castries East, and Castries South.

Castries Mayor Geraldine Lendor- Gabriel was presented with her Mayoral Chain this week as well as the key to the city after she was selected again to lead the Council.

The selection process took place during the weekend with the deputy mayor position being filled by Phyllis Duplessis. Tandi Flood who held that position, relinquished it due to work constraints overseas.

The new board will serve for the next two years. Mayor Lendor- Gabriel, in her speech, lauded her councillers and said “my task as the leader was to identify the strengths and talents of each person and put it to work and I think that I was actually able to do that quite well. I believe that this is the only reason that we are here again because no one person can lead, no one person can believe that they are better than another in any way.”

“Each of us walk through life with a clear recognition that we all have our strengths (and) weaknesses and we are duty bound to hold the hands of each other,” she said.

Permanent Secretary in the Department of Local Housing Dr. Cadelia Lane-Ambrose welcomed the returning counsillors who “did a tremendous job during their term.”

“I know we’ll be performing even more… I want to welcome the staff of the Department of Housing and Local Government as well as the staff of the Castries City Council,” Lane-Ambrose said.

“Castries City Council you outperformed yourself … it speaks to the hard work,” that the CCC does she said. According to her, “since this board was sworn in” flooding in Castries is now a thing of the past.

“It’s continuous,” she told the audience (in reference to the work that they do)- “clearing of the drains, desilting and being out there and ensuring things are in order.”

“They did a number of projects in Castries … Festival of Lights, the Junior Jazz Festival…  this thing took Saint Lucia to over 88 countries… you initiated this idea, this is your contribution not just to the city of Castries but to the people of Saint Lucia. You have given young musicians a platform to showcase their talent and these are the kind of things that we are expected to do when we take on such a responsibility. It’s about service,” Lane-Ambrose added.
