Democracy is alive and well in the U. S. A.

Why am I so fixated on the United States of America? I feel that Saint Lucia’s economic future is inextricably linked to that of the United States of America. It is not only about tourism, but also about the supply of goods and services. Most importantly, our currency is pegged to the United States Dollar. I feel it necessary to keep my readers’ eyes on the prize. If the U. S. A. falls, we fall. Do you remember the recession of 2008? Let us rejoice for the divine intervention that moved mightily in the minds of the electors to vote to preserve Democracy.

In my last column, I mentioned, it was too close to call and so it was. After nine days, we are still to get the final results of the midterm elections. However, at this juncture, we know that Democrats will control the Senate, and Republicans will control Congress. In the latter case, just as I predicted, with a slim majority.

President Joseph Biden should be delighted at the overall results, even at this time, as House seats should be decided by the time this column is published, and the Senate seats will be decided in a few weeks based on the run-off in Georgia on December 6, 2022. It was a nail-biting period for both parties as the red wave disappeared. With the wind in President Biden’s back, he went off to the G20 Summit in Bali. Notably, President Putin was absent. However, President Biden met with President Xi Jinping of the People’s Republic of China, and discussed matters related to Ukraine, and Taiwan, and promised continued dialogue. No one seems interested in a war in Asia as is now going on in Europe at this time.

While the US midterm was engaging the minds of world leaders and Americans everywhere, as they awaited the results which overshadowed a number of other things that were happening during the past week. Just one week after the midterm elections, former President, Donald J. Trump was quick to get to the starting gates, and first unto the track to get ahead of other candidates for the Republican nomination, as their presidential candidate for the 2024. He ignored the advice of his family, friends and close advisers. I am ready to predict that it will be a hotly contested primary, and in the end, it will be Biden versus Trump with the former winning the presidential race.

On the Democratic side, the media is already claiming that Kamala Harris could be under pressure to maintain the Vice President’s nomination for 2024. However, there shouldn’t be anything in the way of President Biden, and he is expected to substantially improve his approval ratings over the next few months. President Biden definitely has the wind behind his back. It is now for the Representatives and Senators to push through their legislative agendas before the start of the 2023 – 2024 legislative period.

President Biden is a Networker and a Negotiator, with the results of the midterm not fully declared, he was on his way to the G20 Summit in Bali. While there, he met with President Xi Jinping of the People’s Republic of China to discuss urgent developments, including Ukraine and Taiwan, and promised to continue the dialogue.

This opportunity is taken to update my readers on a few developments in the past week that some may have missed.

1. FTX sent shivers in the Cryptocurrency market, and since that revelation, Bitcoin fell below USD17,000. At least the CEO is talking about how the company finally folded. This situation has just added to the fragile state of cryptocurrencies. It is time for Governments of the free world to step in.

2. America is back in space in a big way with the launch of NASA Artemis 1 which is the first step in returning Astronauts to the moon.

3. Three huge U. S. corporations led by three of the world’s wealthiest entrepreneurs with global economic and social impact, namely Twitter, Meta, and Amazon are sending home thousands of employees at this time when they are about to celebrate Thanksgiving Day giving thanks for the harvest and other blessings of the past year.

4. The world achieved a population of 8 Billion on the 15th November, 2022.

This is a great time to be alive, there is so much happening, and so many opportunities for self-advancement. Let us challenge ourselves to get involved.

In the meantime, stay healthy, stay safe, and be blessed.
