Having lost just two of the ten allotted preliminary round matches of the 2022 Hero CPL T20 tournament – Barbados Royals yesterday overpowered the Guyana Amazon Warriors (GAW) by 87 runs for a convincing win to advance to Friday’s finals.

Sent in to take first knock, the Royals put on an imposing score of 195/5 ; with Rahkeem Cornwall tearing into the opposing bowlers to hit a belligerent 91 (54) 2×4, 11×6.

Skipper Kyle Mayers chipped in with 26 (21) to set the platform with an opening stand of 1/56 (6.4overs), while Azar Khan stroked an aggressive 52 (35) 3×4, 4×6.

Romario Shepherd was GAW’s top bowler with 2/29 (4), while spinners Junior Sinclair, Imran Tahir and Shakib Al Hasan claimed one wicket each.

GAW’s reply was unflattering from the top order onwards, to be down 4/32 (5.4) in the power play overs and never fully recovered from thereon. Skipper Shimron Hetmyer hit 37 (29) 3×4, 1×6 for a top score, but the other batters faltered in the midst of a disciplined and clinical bowling spell from the Royals.

GAW were eventually bowled out for 108 (17.4); with young Bajan seamer Ramon Simmonds bagging 3/17 (3), while spinners Cornwall 2/10 (2) and Mujeeb Ur Rahman 2/21 (4) contributed to the rout of the home team.

The evening match was set to feature Saint Lucia Kings vs. Jamaica Tallawahs.
