What was Marvin Gaye thinking when he collaborated to produce the song – What’s Going On? Unlike Louis Armstrong who asked the question What a Wonderful World, Marvin Gaye saw chaos, children crying, people dying, etc. Today, we live in a world of prophetic reality. Many things that we never thought possible are being revealed before our eyes. It is a discomforting world.
It is just a matter of time before the leaders of the world display their pent up emotions and launch the third world war and bring into reality Bob Marley’s song titled War. Since the end of the Second World War in 1945, two years after I was born, the leading nations of the world went on an unprecedented arms race to equip themselves with the best in military hardware. In doing this, they hoped that dominance would have been achieved and become a deterrent to future wars. That was fair thinking but when so much is put into a project, there comes a time when the temptation to use the weapons can no longer be suppressed, and opportunities to use them will be exploited.
It seems very likely that war will be declared from the four corners of the world. These thoughts may seem pessimistic but the reality is that there is a war right now in Ukraine where Russia is the aggressor and is unleashing chaos upon people who seek to follow a democratic way of life. Ukraine’s centuries of development has been crushed to the ground. Industries have been wiped out. This is not the way the people of this modern era should behave. As the war rages on in Ukraine, other world powers are sizing up their chances of similar invasion to settle old disputes.
The law abiding and peace loving people of the world must stand up for justice as one people with the full acknowledgement that We are the World. This was promoted as the theme song at the USA for Africa charity concert in 1985, which brought together a number of award winning artistes. This is the time when we need to heed a certain call. Love is definitely all that we need. We must inculcate a Unity of Purpose in seeking PEACE which can only exist in an atmosphere of LOVE.
As I sat in the quiet of the night and listened to the songs mentioned in this piece, I heard an inner voice saying, it is possible to have a reversal in the way we live our lives. There must be a better way. Let us get grounded in the principles set out in the holy writings of all religions, regarding what our Creator desires of us.
In spite of whatever is going on in our world today, life goes on. No one is going to stop advancing his/her agenda to wait and see how things are going to turn out. Governments and businesses are racing against time to find solutions to the myriad of problems confronting us. Uncertainty is rife in our midst. No one can be sure of what tomorrow will bring. We live in a world where the environment changes from moment to moment. The reality is that the only constant is change.
The challenges of today demand a coming together of minds to arrive at the best possible solutions to tackle the possible Escalation of War inside and outside of Ukraine. Inflation, Climate Change, COVID 19 and other diseases, Hunger, Crime, Illegal Drugs, etc are all claiming a toll on human lives. NATO and the UN should be pivotal in finding solutions, and willing to demand more from governments.
Let us not forget that COVID is still with us. While we seek to free up ourselves and return to our normal lives let us exercise caution and adhere to the established protocols. Life is priceless, it is a gift from our Creator, cherish it.
