The Department of Sustainable Development presents Stop The POPs This Christmas, a talk/giveaway radio program geared at channeling persistent organic pollutants (POPs) awareness through the 2021 holiday season hype in Saint Lucia. At its core, the four-episode series provides POPs and POPs-related definitions, the sources of such pollutants, and explains why residents should care about stopping contamination and minimizing exposure.
The December 12th pilot warmed up RealFM listeners on-air and online with an on-set appeal for the public to “… play your part by first being informed, understanding what these chemicals are, where they’re coming from and how you may be exposed. We will talk about exposure and all the effects of these chemicals on you as individuals and what it can mean for our society if a lot of us are falling ill with this. There are social costs as well, so we will talk more about that in subsequent broadcasts.” The weekly program will also give listeners a chance to win exciting prizes including LED lighting accessories, kitchen appliances, and hand toolsets.
Stop The POPs This Christmas is the first activity on Saint Lucia’s Stop the POPs awareness campaign slate, rolled out under the GEF-funded project titled “Development and Implementation of a Sustainable Management Mechanism for POPs in the Caribbean”. This project has assisted Saint Lucia and seven other Caribbean countries in meeting their obligations as Parties to the Stockholm Convention, an international environmental treaty that aims to eliminate or restrict the production and use of persistent organic pollutants (POPs).
Stop The Pops This Christmas is now airing every Wednesday in December on RealFM 91.3FM and their Facebook Live from 11:30 am-12:00 pm
