Gros Islet Beach Front Development Under Scrutiny

The Saint Lucia National Trust became aware, through social media posts, of what appeared to be an illegal development within the beach area in Gros Islet Town. We immediately visited the site and shared the alarm expressed by those who were commenting on the development.

We contacted the Development Control Authority who agreed to conduct a site visit and to take any action appropriate within the law. They did and this matter is now being handled through the appropriate channels.

The Trust is very pleased with the vigilance and actions taken by members of the public on this matter. We have no doubt that your actions contributed to the ongoing attempts by the authorities to resolve the issue.

Over the past years the Trust and its partners have, unfortunately, often been lone voices calling for adherence to the laws and respect for citizens’ rights. Our actions to advance responsible development that respect these rights have often drawn criticism from several sectors of the society and government, but we persisted, because it is one of the responsibilities we were created to uphold.

We welcome the part played by members of the public on this particular matter and look forward to your continued vigilance and interventions whenever Saint Lucia’s rights and patrimony are being threatened, or laws violated.
