Gros Islet Women New SLNCA / Acynta Auguste 50-Over Cricket Champion

Gros Islet women defeated former champions South Castries Lionesses (SCL) by 4 runs to be crowned champions of the 2021 Acynta Auguste 50-over women’s tournament, which was played at the Mindoo Phillip Park (MPP) last Saturday.

Captain Malika Edward called it right for Gros Islet, when she won the toss and decided to bat. Her team made 135 all out in 43 overs. Edward top scored with a well-played 49 that included 5 fours and 1 six before she was out, caught by Nerissa Crafton at deep mid-on off the bowling of Chole Elibox.

The opening pair, Malika Edward and Cian Felix put on 77 before Cian was stumped by wicketkeeper, Ashlene Edward off the bowling of Chole Elibox for 14.

Skyy Smith who was promoted to No. 3 did not last too long, as she was the next batter out caught by Elisha James for 2.

Former national player Swayline Williams hit a fiery 23 off 25 deliveries before she was caught by Nerissa Crafton off the bowling of Princess Olliviere.

The other batters did not trouble the scorers too much, Suenelli Dorius not out 7, Niesha Cherry 5, Jewel Nelson 0, Makada Dubois 0, Selena Ross 0 and Reanna Sexius 0.

Fall of wickets – 1 for 77, 2 for 87, 3 for 93, 4 for 116, 5 for 128, 6 for 128, 7 for 130, 8 for 135, 9 for 135, all out 135. Extras 35.

Bowling for South Castries Lionesses, Teaddie Crawford picked up 4 for 31 in 10 overs, Chloe Elibox bagged 2 for 34 in 8 overs, Nerissa Crafton took 2 for 30 in 10 overs and 1 wicket to Princess Oliviere.

Chasing 136 for victory, South Castries Lionesses was dismissed for 131 in 24.3 overs, at one point South Castries were 93 for 5. Captain Ashlene Edward who opened the batting top scored with 27 before she was out, caught by Cian Felix off the bowling of Suenelli Dorius with the score on 60 for 2.  Teaddie Crawford 21, Nerissa Crafton 14 and Elisha James 10 the main contributors with the bat.

Verena Felecien 5, Sheena St. Mark 6, Princess Olliviere 4, Cornelia Pelage not out 0 and Sylvie Pelage 0.

Fall of wickets – 1 for 40, 2 for 60, 3 for 70, 4 for 86, 5 for 93, 6 for 102, 7 for 125, 8 for 130, 9 for 130, all out 131. Extras 36.

Bowling for Gros Islet, Off Spinner Suenelli Dorius bagged 5 for 45 in 7 overs, Malika Edward continue her good run on form taking 3 for 39 in 9.3 overs and Swayline Williams with 2 for 13 in 3 overs.

At the brief awards ceremony for what was a very successful tournament were SLNCA 3rd Vice-President and Gros Islet Females’ Team Manager, Roseline Preville and SLNCA 2nd Vice-President Simmons Jules.
