16-Day Activism Against Gender-based Violence Ends

SAINT LUCIA Thursday ended its annual celebration of the 16 days of activism against gender-based violence. Empowering Our Women, St. Lucia Organisation, coordinated a 16 – day social media advocacy campaign to help sensitized the public’s perception on the issue that surrounds gender based violence in Saint Lucia.

The 16 Days of activism against gender-based violence was an international campaign that commenced on November 25th and ended on December 10th. This is an annual event held in accordance with the United Nations Women 16 days of activism.

Empowering our Women, St. Lucia Organisation collectively launched a social media campaign, called “WE ORANGE TOGETHER” to help highlight the need for the eradication of gender-based violence within St. Lucia and the Caribbean region holistically.

President and Co-founder of Empowering our Women St. Lucia organisation, Ms. Tara Moses, stated that the goal of this campaign was to help raise emphasis on the detrimental impacts gender based violence has on its survivors, as well as the society.

“We aim to additionally provide a robust referral system created by the Gender Relations Bureau to assist survivors of gender-based violence in getting institutionalized help,” she said.

She added, “I additionally believe that mitigating this issue should start early in life, by educating and collaborating with young adolescent boys and girls by promoting respectful relationships and gender equality. Working with the youth is a “best bet” for faster, sustainable progress in preventing and eradicating gender-based violence.”

The “WE ORANGE TOGETHER” campaign commenced with the dissemination of information via its social media platforms (Instagram, facebook & Twitter). It executed a range of interactive sessions for viewers, as well as the publication of biographies highlighting outstanding grass root organisations and young leaders around the world whose aim is to help confront gender based violence within their region.

Empowering Our Women St. Lucia Organisation initiated a stream of live discussions via Instagram and Zoom calls with experts, counsellors and other stakeholders.
