THE opposition Saint Lucia Labour Party is in support of the State of Emergency declaration that was clothed in legality by an act of Parliament Tuesday.
Opposition leader Philip J Pierre, in endorsing the motion in parliament that gives Prime Minister Allen Chastanet sweeping powers to control the spread of the novel coronavirus in the country, said that extraordinary times call for extraordinary activities.
Noting that the situation in the country is grave, Pierre said that his side of government is erring on the side of the health of the country.
“We do not want our country to fail before or during this crisis. We have a point of view as an opposition but it’s never for our country to fail,” Pierre said.
The opposition leader said he and his team will support the measures as outlined by the prime minister but noted that “we have to look at what brought us here.”
“Why is there so much distrust in a country of 165,000?” Pierre questioned, adding that the present situation in the country is a time for reflection.
