A young, talented native of La Haut, Laborie whose dream it was to entertain and bring happiness to every soul he had the privilege to stand before, Kirby ‘DJ Cue’ Mathurin is steadily bringing that joy to the people he meets every day much thanks to his job which allows him to play music out on the high seas.
The vibrant 22-year-old is currently flying the flag of Saint Lucia high across the globe as he works as a professional DJ for Carnival Cruise Lines. Cue made the big leap towards the cruise industry in 2018, and he has not regretted it since.
Landing his dream job didn’t come overnight though.
For the reasoned dancer, singer, writer, composer, DJ and show host, it all started with a love for entertainment, which bloomed at the Choiseul Secondary School. Then and now he’s been a regular fixture on the competition stage for all things entertainment including the 2014 Mr Choiseul Secondary School Pageant which he won,the 2015 YouthFest Teen competition (winner), and the 2017 and 2018 Heineken Green Synergy competitions where heearned the runner-up spots.
A former employee of the Coconut Bay Resort in Vieux Fort, Kirby also left his footprint on the hotel’s entertainment scene and was once nominated the ‘Spirit of Coconut Bay’.
Always clad in the national colours of Saint Lucia, “The Entertainer” (another one of his monikers) has travelled to various countries as a professional DJ including Martinique, Florida, Aruba, Curacao, The Bahamas, The Dominican Republic, St Kitts, St Marten, Puerto Rico, The Turks & Caicos, Mexico, Belize, Honduras, the Cayman Islands, Colombia and Costa Rica, just to name a few.
Cue continues to count his blessings every day and even when he recounts how big of a risk he took to be able to do what he loves on one of most prestigious cruise liners, he has no regrets.
“Every time I play, I learn something about the different cultures and ethnicities that make the world turn,” he said about his experiences playing for a diverse number of guests on a nightly basis.
DJ Cue is content with his current positioning in life but confesses that he plans to one day open his very own night club, maybe in his La Haut community.
