THE Central Library hosted a Reading Extravaganza on Wednesday July 3, 2019 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Derek Walcott Square. Although few schools patronized this event, it turned out to be a resounding success.
The objectives of this activity were to help nurture effective reading habits in children from ages 5-12 through their engagement in constructive fun activities, and to sensitize participants to the importance of reading, and its correlations with their day-to-day lives.
The students were engaged in a plethora activities, most notably Reading Competitions, Reading Mentorship, and Modelling in their favourite book character costumes.
Arthur Allain the present Honourary Chair for the National Association of Librarians and Information Professionals (NALIP), along with Shemmy J were the main local artistes for the day. The Vivacious Solange Stanislas was the emcee.
The winners of the Reading Competition were:
Grade K

2nd Place – Tarik Cools – Carmen Rene

1st Place – Imani Cools – Carmen Rene
2nd Place – Maliah Laurent – Dame Pearlette Louisy Primary
Prizes will be awarded to the first place winners of each category and the second place winner of the Kindergarten Category. The recipients of prizes will receive a phone or tablet. The phones were sponsored by FLow and Tablets were sponsored by LUCELEC. Staff at the Central Library has relayed their heartfelt gratitude to both sponsors and participants of the competition.
The first prize giving ceremony was held on Friday 8th November at the Dame PearletteLouisy Primary School, to be followed by the St Aloysius R.C. Boys Infant on Monday 11th November, then the Carmen Rene Memorial on Friday 15th November at 9 a.m. respectively.
