THE 10th Annual Castries East Constituency Primary School Math Quiz was a success according to Castries East MP Philip J Pierre, who was also at pains to stress that it is a competition free of political sway.
Pierre was speaking at his party’s press conference on Tuesday — a conference unsurprisingly focused on several political issues, including details on the SLP’s impending September 9 rally.
However, I took the opportunity to ask him how Saturday’s competition went down.
Referring to the event as something “near and dear” to his heart, he made it clear that the Math Quiz is something completely unrelated to politics and is something done merely on a constituency and educational level.
“I just want to make a few points clear.” Pierre began. “This activity is completely apolitical.” He continued.
The Opposition Leader went on to explain that those politically affiliated to him and his party “do not choose the students.” Rather, “the teachers choose the best Math students” and that “all we do, is we organise it.”
He also went on to explain that “The questions are set by someone who is not involved at all” before reemphasising that “there’s no politics there at all. There’s absolutely no politics.”
Speaking on the event itself, the Castries East MP said: “It was a very good activity, well attended.”
Boo Hinkson was the guest speaker and the top prizes were a school bag full of school supplies, a computer and a trophy.
The participants were students from three Primary Schools located in Castries East; Marchand, TiRocher and Bocage.
Pierre also spoke about the prizes given to “every child who placed first at the Common Entrance Exam in the 3 schools in my constituency. We gave them (each) a tablet and school supplies.”
“It was a very good activity.” Pierre concluded.
