Gun Violence Ends Jouvert But Mas Continues in Gros Islet

A scuffle turns deadly

A brazen gun attack on a crowd of people has left one man dead and others nursing injuries.

Gun violence brought a premature end to the J’ouvert morning celebrations in the community of Gros Islet. It is reported that a lone gun man fired multiple shots into a crowded area after getting into a scuffle, hitting two individuals.

The attacker was perused by police officers and shot and killed. There was no official word on the condition of the other two victims.

The Kiddies and Adult Parade of the Bands were initially cancelled due to the shooting and threats made by members of an outside community to come up to Gros Islet to “solve the situation”, however, after a few early morning meetings, the Commissioner of Police granted permission for the celebrations to continue.

Junior Carnival will begin promptly at 11:00 a.m. and the adults will follow immediately after. The rules for invasion or bands remains in effect and will be enforced.
