‘Spider Cup’ Advancing

On Monday evening in the last quarterfinal game played at the GIPF, Massy Stores Northern United trounced Police FC 8-1 in the inaugural “Spider Cup” organized by the Saint Lucia National Lotteries Authority, Gros Islet Football League and Gros Islet MP, Lenard “Spider” Montoute.

Police showed up with no substitutes against a team that recently won the Saint Lucia Football Association 1st Division Championship at the same venue.

First half action saw both teams going head to head with MNU becoming frustrated at times as all their attempts on goal were well-defended by the lawmen. MNU striker Aramis Gilbert finally broke the deadlock in the 30th minute with a well-taken strike which eluded the Police goal keeper. Nicholas Lawrence of MNU scored on the brink of halftime to end the half 2-0.

With their usual support behind them, it was all MNU. In the 51st minute, national Under-23 player Melvin Doxilly made it 3-0.

MNU made their first change, bringing in national striker Troy Greenidge and from then on it looked like the defensive structure of Police had no real answers to keep this fresh striker at bay.

A whopping five goals were scored in under eight minutes. Greenidge got one to open his account, and then Nicholas Lawrence scored his second in the match in the 81st minute.

Greenidge lived up to his nickname, “the goal machine”, scoring three consecutive goals in the 84th, 86th and 88th minutes. But Police managed to score one in the 85th from a brilliant corner kick taken by Simeon Eristhee.

Semifinal action was expected to be on show last evening at the Gros Islet Playing Field. In game 1, Sports Locker/Dominos Northern United were expected to take on Twist Dominators at 6:00 p.m. while Massy Stores Northern United would have played KFC GMC United at 8:00 p.m.
