ST. LUCIAN athletes at the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janerio officially commenced their medal hunt yesterday with sailor Stephanie Lovell in action in two Laser Radial races. Upon press time yesterday there was no final word as to her performance.
Susanna Pyatt, who is accompanying Stephanie as head coach at the Games, says Stephanie has been training since she arrived in Rio on July 26 and to date has had a solid two weeks training.
“They have never been at the venue before, but have spent a lot of this training time researching the course areas. There are a lot of tricky tides and wind shifts to figure out, however, they feel they have a good base of information to take into the races.”
Lovell has been staying in the village and enjoying the atmosphere. There can be many distractions around the village with so much going on; however, the only thing that has caught Stephanie’s attention on all the famous tennis players.
The next St. Lucian athlete to compete at the Games will be swimmer Jordan Augier, who will be in action on Thursday.
Meanwhile, world-ranked high jumper, Levern Spencer, for the third consecutive time carried the St.Lucia flag at the 2016 Rio Opening Ceremony last Friday. She was selected as the flag bearer by\ fellow Team St. Lucia members.
Spencer, competing in her third Olympic Games, is the most decorated athlete of all time from St. Lucia with medals from Carifta Games, Pan American Games, Commonwealth Games, World Youth Games and Continental Games, World Indoor (5th place). She is also multiple time winner of the Sportswoman of the Year title.
