Northern U., Big Players Open Season With Victories

BIG Players FC and host Massy Stores Northern United secured victories against Boguis and La Clery when the inaugural Digicel Northern Zone Club Championship kicked off last Sunday at the Gros Islet playing field.

In the first encounter between Big Players and Boguis, Boguis FC were hard pressed into their half by Big Players, who featured three strikers.

Despite three scoring opportunities, Big Players finally scored through their captain No. 14 Lincoln Phillip in the 18th minute; Phillip was on the score sheet again in the 27th minute when he played one past the Boguis custodian after he easily passed two defenders.

There was no letting up by Big Players in the second half as Linus Augustin made it 3 – 0 in the 57th minute, while Boguis defender Daniel Sinclaire failed to handle a cross properly only to hit the ball into his own goal in the 65th minute to make it 4 – 0.

Big Player’s Pernal Williams struck in the 73rd minute made it 5 – 0; while Jordan St. Ange sealed the deal in the 84th minute to give his team all three points in the encounter.

In game two between La Clery All Stars and host Massy Stores Northern United, the latter won by 1 – 0, following a goal scored by Nicholas Lawrence in the 54th minute of play, Lawrence strike coming off a deflection was enough to claim all three points for his team. La Clery All Stars’s Jabari Walcott was shown a red card and ejected from the game by referee Leo Clarke in the 34th minute after a series of fouls.

Meanwhile, the tournament continued last evening with double-headers at the Gros Islet and Marchand playing fields respectively. At Marchand,FC Pioneers took on RV Juniors and VSADC played Flames from Marchand.
At Gros Islet the first match GMC United took on Ciceron Seagulls SC, while NYAH FC played Dominators FC.
