The PM must focus like a laser beam on executing his “five-to-stay-alive” plan so that relief comes as soon as possible. He is aware that he stands at the dawn of a brand new era in Saint Lucia. He must remain committed to his inner voice which has been refined by the many personal interactions with citizens all over the country, including his Desruisseaux constituency. He must remain steadfast to his vision even as he looks back occasionally to the past 37 years for inspiration and guidance.
He will recall the constant ranting and raving of the former government whenever they felt threatened, and to avoid such conduct himself. If we have learned anything it is that the human mind and only the mind, determines how we perceive the world, how we live, how we choose to vote and how we work to make our lives better.
I have elsewhere expressed a liking for the scientific method. Science leaves little room for emotions and childlike conclusions. When a physician deems a procedure necessary, whether the patient is family, friend or stranger is of little consequence. Similarly, an agriculture scientist makes comparisons between crop varieties or animal breeds on experimental results, and not on personal preference or emotions. Personal likes and dislikes do not enter the picture. Some persons approach politics in a similar objective and dispassionate manner.
Last Thursday (VOICE, June 22), I suggested that Ernest Hilaire would be an ideal leader of the SLP if the party is focused on rebuilding. That view was based on two premises: Hilaire seemed the preferred pre-election candidate, chosen by the former political leader, as his replacement. He had studied and worked in England and his stint as CEO of West Indies Cricket was helpful. His skin tone was (and is), the furthest thing from my mind. Had his light brown complexion been an issue I would not have ended my piece suggesting that the MP for Laborie also deserved a look-in as leader of the opposition, (and party?), if only to recognize the abiding loyalty of his constituents.
Finally, I wish to suggest that people stop bellyaching about the results of the last general elections. Instead, find a hobby and grow to like it. A new hobby (gardening?) may help change the way they think about things. They may discover a new and happier personality if they allow the things they cannot change to pass by, unmolested.
Also, supporters of UWP must find the grace to let their party’s victory be shared by all who wish to participate. This victory is about what the party can do for the island. Remember the reason the former government was voted out of office. I remain convinced that, only God can change hearts and minds.
There’s still much to say, considering change. The future is uncertain and time waits for no man. That’s what obligates us as a people to put our shoulders to the wheel and push in the same progressive direction. If Prime Minister Allen Chastanet triumphs it will be in proportion to his energy and vision. If he fails it must be because he attempted to conquer heights no one else dared. It will pay him to keep in mind that among his government’s achievements, only the sense of common national purpose will count for anything.
