Thank You from Former M.P. for Gros Islet

THE 2016 General Elections are now behind us – the sounds of battle stilled, the votes counted, the winners hailed, the losers proclaimed. The voices of the people of the Gros Islet Constituency have placed me in the latter category and so I humbly respect their will.

I wish therefore to offer my sincere gratitude to all those who voted for me, and by so doing, demonstrated their approval and confidence in my term as their Parliamentary Representative. I will continue to work in your interest. Let me also express my profound appreciation to those who toiled with me and supported me, not only for the elections, but in serving the people of the Gros Islet Constituency during the last four and a half years.

I also wish to congratulate my opponent on his victory, but I would not be true to myself if I did not deplore the negative features of his campaign which was otherwise well and toughly fought.

I thank the Hon. Prime Minister, Dr. Kenny D. Anthony for the opportunity to serve in his Cabinet and my colleague Ministers for their support during our term in office. Let me also take this opportunity to thank those who provided support to me in my role as Minister of Commerce, Business Development, Investment and Consumer Affairs – my staff at the Ministry, other Ministries, allied agencies of the Ministry and other public sector agencies; as well as private sector agencies with whom I constantly interfaced.

As I have said before, I entered politics to continue a life of national service that I had previously been rendering in other professional occupations. I am therefore proud of what I have been able to contribute to the constituency of Gros Islet as its Parliamentary Representative and to the country in my previous positions as well as Minister for Commerce, Business Development, Investment and Consumer Affairs.

Finally, while the elections are a fact of history that are now behind us, this does not preclude us from reflecting on and having a national dialogue about features of the campaign that should disturb right-thinking citizens- specifically the issue of influencing voters through financial inducements on election day. We can only make progress as a nation when we accept and correct deficiencies and malpractices in our behaviour as a nation.

Once again, I thank all those who have worked with me as Parliamentary Representative for Gros Islet and as a Minister of the last government. May God bless you the people of Gros Islet and our St. Lucia. God is good all the time!!
