IN less than one week the Lightning Aquatics (LA) Swim Club had two things to be thankful for. On Friday, June 3, a handful of the club’s swimmers visited Cap Maison to receive a cheque from The Oliver Gobat Sports (TOGS) Fund. The club has been engaged in vigorous fundraising activities for some time now in an effort to purchase swim gear and, equipment and to ensure that all its swimmers of varied backgrounds are able to compete in local and regional swimming competitions.
The cheque was presented on behalf of TOGS by Mr. Ross Stevenson, General Manager at Cap Maison. Said Stevenson: “The TOGS Fund was set up by the Gobat family, in memory of their third son, Oliver who was passionate about fitness and sports.”
He went on to encourage the youngsters to keep up the good work and to excel in any sports of their choice. He noted that being involved in sports will help them to be disciplined which will augur well in all aspects of their lives.
LA President, Mrs. Tessa Charles-Louis said, “Our heartfelt thanks to TOGS Fund for their generous donation of EC$5000 It will go a long way in assisting our swimmers. We encourage Corporate St. Lucia to follow their lead and invest in and support the development of our swimmers”.
Meanwhile, 15 of the team’s 24 swimmers participated in the 25th BASA Invitational Swim Meet in Barbados. LA copped 3rd place OECS team and overall 7th place out of 15 teams. LA was one of 5 Saint Lucian teams at the swim meet which was held from May 27-29. Apart from Barbados, some of the other participating teams hailed from Antigua, Grenada, St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Guyana.
The team received 1Gold; 6 individual Silver medals; 1 Silver medal for the 9-10 girls 50 Metre Relay and 7 Bronze medals. Additionally, 11 ribbons were received – 3 fourth place; 5 fifth place; 1 sixth place; 1 seventh place and 1 eighth place.
