It was with some misgiving tinged with a little relief, that I read the tribute to Michael Chastanet, father of new Prime Minister Allen Chastanet, promoting the former as father-of-the-day. I have known Earl since the early seventies and his father before him. Pilot Bousquet, had spent many years as Harbour Master in Castries, in which position he was well acquainted with Michael Chastanet who operated several wooden hull vessels at the time.
I was equally intrigued by the statement that Michael had defeated his best friend in the ultimate race to the top. Oh dear, thought I, who could that defeated best friend be? Could it be the one who had declared the last elections a war between that ‘best friend’ and his troops against the Chastanet clan? Never mind, it’s no longer relevant.
It would have been an excellent touch however, had Earl been invited to participate in the Fathers’ Day re-union with new and former Prime Ministers sharing Champagne with Michael as the journalist looked on wearing his best Afro garb and his priced National Journalist Medal loosely hanging around his proud neck.
Would it have made a difference had that letter been written by someone else? More to the point; will Earl use his considerable experience and personal knowledge of Michael Chastanet to promote his son Allen as deserving of the place to which the electorate has elevated him? What will his former boss think if Earl were to pivot 180 degrees promoting the new Prime Minister as part of his (Earl’s), journalistic journey? Over to you Rick.

O thou enveloped in thy cloak, (1)
Arise and warn! (2)
Thy Lord magnify, (3)
Thy raiment purify, (4)

And show not favour, seeking wordly gain! (6)

Leave Me (to deal) with him whom I created lonely, (11)
And then bestowed upon him ample means, (12)
