St. Lucia’s two time Olympian and multiple “sportswoman of the year”, winner Levern Spencer jump started her 2016 indoor season with two gold medal winning performances in the USA this past weekend.
Competing at the UAB Blazer Invitational in the Birmingham Complex Arena, in Birmingham, Alabama, the three time World Championship finalist easily won her first indoor competition since 2014, with a clearance of 1.86 metres.
Twenty four hours later, the Caricom record holder was again in action in the UAB Vulcan Invitational held at the same venue and though the competition was made more challenging by the presence of American record holder Chaunte Lowe, Spencer was able to come out joint winner with Lowe, by clearing a mark of 1.92 metres. This mark enabled her to reset the complex record of 1.91 metres that she set in 2014.
The star high jumper, whose prolific 2015 efforts enabled her to end the season ranked in the world’s top ten, is one of two St. Lucian high jumpers who has already qualified for the Rio Olympics later this year. The other is JeannelleScheper.
Spencer will be going head on against Scheper for the senior female “athlete of the year” title when the St.Lucia Athletics Association hosts its annual awards ceremony this weekend.
