Mental Slavery – The Myth

Image of John Peters
By John Peters

SLAVERY can be defined as involuntary servitude to a dominating influence. When one therefore describes the present state of the Afro-Caribbean diaspora as being in mental slavery, the phrase has no meaning. It is a poor choice of words that has caused more destruction to our people. Marcus Garvey was wrong, Bob Marley was more wrong and all those who have repeated these unfortunate words have done more destruction to the advancement of our people.

I refuse to accept that as we are approaching two centuries since Emancipation, as a people with a rich history of resistance and perseverance towards the most hideous crime ever committed by one race over another, that I am left in any form of mental slavery. Those who wish to embrace these words must read the history of the Brigands Wars. Mental slavery is a myth that has been perpetuated for far too long.

One writer has concluded that there are five aspects of confirmation of mental slavery as follows:

1.What Language does one speak?
2.What is your name?
3.What foods you eat?
4.Who is your God?
5.What clothes you wear?

So I have subjected myself to the test to confirm the extent of my involuntary servitude to a dominating influence.

I speak the English Language by choice, as although I have been exposed to French, Spanish, Latin and a bit of Hebrew, yet I choose to speak and write in English. I have no desire to learn any new language. It is not a dominating influence on me.

Next is my name, it may sound European. At university I flirted with the idea of changing my name to Lesedi Jabari, and even went as far as writing that on one of the projects I submitted. I got a rude awakening when the Professor advised that there was no one enrolled as Lesedi Jabari and I did not submit the coursework. I quickly realized that sticking with John Peters was in my interest.

On the foods that I eat, I love my doubles and roti, my pelau, my breadfruit. I do agree that the foods of slaves are still dominant in our menu, but the culinary ingenuity must be also considered. The pigtail and the other salted pig meat were the rejected parts of the pig when slaughtered in the UK, which were shipped to the Caribbean. The saltfish also was the rejected cod fish that was salted and also sent to the Caribbean. I would say that the Folk Research Centre has done an injustice to us by perpetuating that eating these foods should be celebrated. I think it must be discouraged and that the true celebration of our past should relate to the healthy non-organic food, not these salted food that destroys our health.

Who is your God? Those who suggest that Christianity is a white man’s European religion, are those that have never read the Bible. Christianity was in Africa before it reached Rome. Zipporah, the wife of Moses was African. The first major leaders after the death of Jesus were Africans. Christianity belongs to all peoples, and my choice to serve Jesus Christ has nothing to do with mental slavery.

Lastly, what clothes you wear? I wear a shirt and a pants to any function. I refuse to put on a tie as a normal form of dress. By choice I wore a jacket and bowtie to a function in Germany, by choice I wore a jacket to a funeral.

The only time I was forced to wear a jacket and tie was to attend a meeting in Washington with the Kuwait Fund. In 1994, then Prime Minister John Compton wanted me to attend a meeting with the Kuwait Fund in Washington, to present the Millennium Highway project. I believe by then he had become aware of my aversion to this clothing. A few days before I got a call from John Bristol informing me that he got instructions from the Prime Minster to ensure that I came to the meeting with a jacket and tie. I hurriedly went to the J Q Charles store which is now Blue Coral and purchased my jacket for the journey.

We are not mental slaves in the Caribbean, we are a strong resilient people with a rich history. We may have been influenced in part by our experiences, but there is no dominating influence that has us in involuntary servitude. These words have been floated for far too long and it is time we arise into a rightful position of who we are. Sing the Bob Marley song, but reject the words as not reflective of who you aware.

  1. People can use various terms to refer to the attitudes, prejudices, value systems etc which adversely impact African peoples (and generally in the wider society) after the period of enslavement and colonialism. This does not remove from the fact of their existence. I do not think speaking English necessarily bars me from becoming better informed about and developing positive attitudes toward all aspects of my heritage and in particular my African Heritage. However, there is no doubt that within our society, the speaking of English (as opposed to Kweyol) and the closeness of ones English to what is considered standard affects others perception of you, the intelligence, class etc. Even the accent in which you speak English can affect how people view you and treat you. This of course arises from the legacy of denigrating African expressions. The same can be said for names, types of foods and religion. These attitudes are reinforced in the Education system, in religious institutions and in all kinds of social relationships.

The version of Christianity which prevails here and which was introduced here remains that of Europe. Most Christians are ignorant of African antecedents of many Christian concepts partly for that reason. While some Africans did adopt Christianity, many who came to the Caribbean did not. Like in the case of other aspects of African heritage and maybe more so, African religion was maligned and abhorred and seen as the embodiment of evil.

There still remains a general overvaluing of European ”standards”, ideologies and ways of approaching various aspects of life. This is as much so with our governments. Referring to the present situation as Mental slavery may not fit Mr. Peter’s taste and it need not. However it does not change the state of affairs.

  2. Since, I am descended from some African slave who was most likely sold by another African because the African who came across did not belong to the tribe of the seller, why am I celebrating that part of my ancestry? Tell me. My great, great, great grandparent was not acceptable to the African in Africa who sold or betrayed him. So why accept either Christianity or Islam? Their gods always hiding behind the clouds, according to their very holy despicable bastard prophets, agreed the holding of slaves. Like the Greek gods, those gods are so damn human. Only now these two gods stop taking up select people up into the skies because there is too much space debris floating out there. Since I am mixed and not acceptable or will be accepted by any tribe, what is there in Africa to admire? Is it their tribal poverty, their inter-tribal cruelty, or their manifest ape-like Muslim religious barbarity?

  3. John Peters:

The most disgraceful action performed by the human being is to pray and worship another man as his God. You are in such a magnified state of denial, that you feel not even micro ohm of resistance to generating plain and unmittigated lies. How can you pen such crap that your Anglophone is of your choosing ? You are a perfect example of a Negro whose mind was transplanted in 1492, better discribed in contemporary language as a Frankenstien Monster with a transplanted brain.

Walking around with a slave identity given you by the slave Master, who imposed his language upon you under the threat of death to severe all connections and communications with your mother’s tounge and history, was certainly no “choice” of yours and making such a claim leaves me to thinking you are delusional.

“There are, however, millions of people, in the Caribbean and the UK, who do not need a database to tell them that they are linked to Britain’s hidden slave-owning past. The descendants of the enslaved carry the same English surnames that appear in the ledgers of the Slave Compensation Commission – Gladstone, Beckford, Hibbert, Peters, Blair, etc – names that were imposed on their ancestors, initials that were sometimes branded on their skin, in order to mark them as items of property”

You may want to read the whole article : http://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/jul/12/british-history-slavery-buried-scale-revealed

I was given a slave-name coupled with the so-called Christian name, and discarded these slave names at my earliest convenience paying a lawyer some pittance to change my name in the courts, and when I attended College, my American Caucasian Chemistry Professor Dr. Frazier, unlike yours, would often articulate my whole name a few times, because of the natural rhythm in the full name, and ended by saying “I just love these names”. So cut the crap about your professor told you so and so.

You are a Negro with a slave name, identifying you as property of the slave master who worship a naked Caucasian as your God, and nothing can justify such an abomination, but to say that you lost your Name, Language, Religion, and History by choice ? You are delusion, hallucinating, or insane.

I pity you, that your insanity would make you think yourself exceptional by being mono linguistic. Close your eyes? JESUS ! you just saw an image of a Caucasian, blue-eyed, blond-hair, naked male. So cut the crap about Christianity is a Black African religion.

  5. Eng. Peters, Christianity is only to thousand years old; so how is it: Christianity is a Black African religion”. You should not attempt to in print your convoluted believes on the general public. I am sadly disappointed with your penning.

  6. There are a specimen of Negro, Caucasians are most comfortable being around; these non-threatening Black like a Josie or a Rick John Wayne, whose sole objective in life is to marry a “white” woman, survive by telling Caucasians how “black and uglier” the rest of us are. Like the great men of our times, I changed the slave-name not to Muhammad Ali, but something like that. However, there are individuals who love their slave-names. Rick Wayne who was called Carasco by his slave master, felt that this slave-name was not white enough, so he changed it to the lily white name Ricky John Wayne, and goes around telling everyone he can, he is a Roman.

Language most reveals the person. listen WELL!! Speak that I may see thee in the brilliance of the light of Truth, or the infernal darkness of the ignorant.

The Religion of White Supremacy has produced Self-hating Blacks in Saint Lucia, the likes that the World has not yet seen. When the SELF-HATING NEGROES worship his Slave-Master as his God, he subconsciously perceives the perfection of God in the manifestation of the Caucasian image that represents his God.

Since God is perfect and represented with a thin nose, thin lips, pale skin, the self-hating Negro internalizes his own features as deformities – since perfection in his own mind, is pale skinned, thin nose, blond hair, blue eyes, but the mentally enslaved Negro like John Peters have dark skin, wide nostrils, and nappy hair, he perceives himself as the embodiment of imperfections, and is violent in his self-hatred. God the perfect one has blond hair; the Negro has NAPPY hair; he sees himself as an inferior creation, diseased with the Psychiatric illness of the INFERIORITY COMPLEX.

He is a danger to himself and all things that reminds him of his inferior station in life – he hates his beautiful African woman, hates his African religions, and would love nothing more than to marry a pale skinned female as demonstrated by Judge Clarence Thomas, therefore he spends his life running away from his self in the pursuit of the illusive white perfection, not wanting to learn an Arabic or African Language, and becomes a perpetual apology for his Black self.

This is the sad reality of the mis-educated Negro who prays and worships the image of a Caucasian-man-God; It does not matter how skilled one is at solving Differential Equations or implementing the laws of Thermo Dynamics. Take a listen into the mind of the Negro John Wayne as he describes a black and white Lucian:

  7. The following is the only “raison d’ etre” that can possibly justify Mr. P|eter’s current fall from GRACE”
In dire need of a solid “flying buttress” to prop up his mothballed “goth-sic” political roadside, bee-shop “Chas” solicits the capable political scientist to join his campaign entourage. BUT – needing his puppet meister hands on the pulse and jugular of his subjects -at all times- John Peters must do as Peetar Josie et al have done: PUBLICLY swear PAPAL ALLEGIANCE- Echo the sentiments of earlier Darwin inspired sociologists- who supported chattel slavery with the “Natural Selection” postulates.
There, you clearly see how Man “Darwin” is worshiped to perpetuate IMMORALITY.
I bet a 5 day Cruise aboard any LA or Tampa based cruise liner, that Mr Peters will toss his hat in the election camp\aign
-even if as independent- to act as spoiler
    – in some constituency
    – on behalf of Bee-shop Chas ?
    Wanna bet monsieur Peeters

  8. I recall a melodramatic refrain at my Confirmation ceremony in the -now – Minor Basilica at Micoud Street , adjacent the square:
I renounce the devil and all his works and pomps…etc.. etc
Mr. Peter’s , it does read like the ANTI- Christ has got you in a strangle hold on your knees as you solemnly DENOUNCE your heritage and perpetual reality.
Even your dust covered BIBLE has memos to the temptation that you have accepted- from the Flambeau of Dante’s Inferno:
Recall the saga of Jesus’ 40 days in the wilderness:
Your thirst for direct participation in Government- has got the best of you.
You are so delirious that the mirage in the desert got the better of you:
Chas’ charm ” fall down at my feet and announce the inferiority of your heritage- Curse the sun for your awful tan- give a high five to our papal majesty- after all the Papal Bull that blessed Spain and Portugal’s rape and plunder of indigenous peoples and of Africa was sanctified in heaven
    – Dominus VobiScum
    Go ahead Pee-ters respond with
    “et cum spirituo”
Rise, you are now the rock -the flying buttress -upon which Bee-shop Chas shall resuscitate his goth-sic ‘political’ chapel.
    AMEN!!!!!!!!!!

  9. A reflection of the African Rebellion, known as the Watts Riots on today’s fiftieth anniversary.

No people in world history has had to endure the magnitude of oppression by the Caucasian Christian as was and is imposed upon the African American — Adolf Hitler was a Caucasian Catholic Christian, but when the Jews left the exterminating camps, THEY KNEW THEIR NAMES, RELIGION AND HISTORY; not so for the victims of the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade.

On Aug. 11, 1965, a fight erupted as police in Los Angeles arrested an African-American man in an incident that sparked racially charged protests, the message of which would be echoed by the Black Lives Matter movement 50 years later.

It’s the 50th anniversary of the day Marquette Frye, 21, was pulled over by a California highway patrolman for drunk driving, and things turned violent. The confrontation would result in six days of deadly rebellions later to be known as the Watts Rebellion.

The conflict between the predominantly African-American Watts neighborhood in south Los Angeles and law enforcement would ultimately result in 34 deaths, thousands of injuries and more than $40 million in property damage.

It’s a story that would repeat in 1992 when Los Angeles police were filmed beating Rodney King. And would repeat itself — with less destruction and fewer casualties — when Michael Brown was shot to death in Ferguson, Mo., when Eric Garner, another Black American was choked to death by a gang of New York police officers for selling cigarettes, and again when Freddie Gray’s neck was broken by Baltimore police after his arrest for “looking suspicious”.

Hundreds of people in south Los Angeles turned on police the night of Aug. 11, 1965, when a fight broke out between Frye, his family and officers on the scene. A brief UPI article from the day said a “near riot was touched off” as hundreds of people gathered, some throwing rocks. At least one woman was hospitalized.

One day later, the crowd of protesters swelled to 200 to 300 youths, who fired on police officers, burned cars, and hurled rocks and bottles. The California National Guard was put on alert and by Aug. 13, they deployed to the city.

Though black leaders in the community called for an end to the Rebellion and the looting of white-owned stores, the violence would continue until Aug. 17. When the Rebellion subsided, more than 500 businesses and private buildings were looted, damaged, and burned. More than 250 white owned businesses were destroyed. At least one public building was also destroyed and a dozen damaged or burned as smoke covered the skyline of Los Angeles; it is a story without an end, as Caucasian Christians continue to murder and brutalize the African American citizen daily.

The violence ended by Aug. 17 and Gov. Pat Brown — father of current California Gov. Jerry Brown — created a commission to “investigate” the circumstances that touched off the riots(like they didn’t know). The commission, led by former CIA Director John McCone, returned a report in December of that year, largely blaming high unemployment, poor education and substandard living conditions among the African-American communities for the Rebellion. Racial hatred by the Caucasian Christian Police with the assistance of the judicial system was completely ignored.

“The commission was too ready to assign the blame to migration of rural poor black Southerners to Los Angeles, bringing little education and little ability to make a living in the city,” as the victims of Racial oppression was blamed for everything, at the Commission spoke of race but not of racism. It noted that in African-American housing, employment and wages, Los Angeles was the best city in the nation(what more did the Negroes want ?). It said nothing about, or outright denied, the existence of evil policing practices meant to humiliate, prisons geared toward punishment without rehabilitation, political processes that systematically excluded African Americans from political representation.

The commission suggested a number of reforms to combat the problems it saw as the cause of violence and crime in the city. A new hospital — the Martin Luther King Jr. medical center — and new schools were built, in addition to affordable housing projects.

“They all went through their own dull, devastating spirals of failure,” the Times said.

Five decades later and community leaders are once again trying to revitalize south Los Angeles. A new Martin Luther King Jr. Community Hospital has been built and a charter school operator has taken over the high school that serves the Watts community.

It’s unclear what kind of future lies ahead for the city as yet another generation tackles vicious racist in the United States.

In the wake of protests over the deaths of black men at the hands of the white Christian police officers in the past year, again more “investigations” have been launched, reports have been written. This time the focus has been turned inward on law enforcement.

In March, the U.S. Department of Justice found systemic racial discrimination in both law enforcement and the judicial system in Ferguson. Some officers sent racist emails and disproportionately targeted black people for traffic stops, it said. A report released in July found the St. Louis County Family Court — which serves Ferguson — also violated the constitutional right to due process for black youth.

The American Civil Liberties Union and the UN have also added their voices to the mix, criticizing a nationwide trend of police officers using excessive — and at times lethal — force against people of color

“We urge a comprehensive examination of all laws that could have discriminatory impact on African Americans to ensure that such laws are in full compliance with the country’s legal obligations and relevant international standards,” said Mireille Fanon Mendes France, head of the U.N. Working Group of Experts on People of African Descent.

  10. All the world’s languages traced back to single African mother tongue!

    by Jack King · April 24, 2015

Scientists say they have traced the world’s 6,000 modern languages — from English to Mandarin — back to a single “mother tongue,” an ancestral language spoken in Africa 50,000 to 70,000 years ago.

New research, published in the journal Science, suggests this single ancient language resulted in human civilization — a Diaspora — as well as advances in art and hunting tool technology, and laid the groundwork for all the world’s cultures.

The research, by Quentin Atkinson from the University of Auckland in New Zealand, also found that speech evolved far earlier than previously thought. And the findings implied, though did not prove, that modern language originated only once, an issue of controversy among linguists, according to the New York Times.

Before Atkinson came up with the evidence for a single African origin of language, some scientists had argued that language evolved independently in different parts of the world.

Atkinson found that the first populations migrating from Africa laid the groundwork for all the world’s cultures by taking their single language with them. “It was the catalyst that spurred the human expansion that we all are a product of,” Atkinson said, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Atkinson traced the number distinct sounds, or phonemes — consonants, vowels and tones — in 504 world languages, finding compelling evidence that they can be traced back to a long-forgotten dialect spoken by our Stone Age ancestors, according to the Daily Mail.

Atkinson also hypothesized that languages with the most sounds would be the oldest, while those spoken by smaller breakaway groups would utilize fewer sounds as variation and complexity diminished.

The study found that some of the click-using languages of Africa have more than 100 phonemes, or sounds, whereas Hawaiian, toward the far end of the human migration route out of Africa, has only 13, the Times reported. English has about 45 phonemes.

The phoneme pattern mirrors the pattern of human genetic diversity as humans spread across the globe from sub-Saharan Africa around 70,000 years ago.

  11. Jesus,

In reading your illuminating reference to the development of languages across time, and in the globe we live, one can immediately infer that John Peters’ mental devolution parallels the devolution seen in Hawaiian languages’ phoneme usage.

He exhibits the classic symptoms of mental slavery, in that his links to his rich heritage before slavery have been obliterated!
