Dennery Carnival Steps Up Regardless

DENNERY Carnival has once again proven that the community carnival spirit is still present.

Hundreds of revellers took to the Dennery Multi-Purpose Complex last Saturday and Sunday afternoon to be judged before making their way into the streets to participate in this year’s jump-up.

Five carnival bands competed this year, including Back-A-Yard, Phenotiix, Just Revellers, and Accent.

Over the years, Dennery Carnival has grown from strength to strength despite limited funding from corporate sponsors. Nevertheless, organizers point to the high level of camaraderie among revellers that lifts the spirit of the festival.

In these photos, The VOICE captured some of the scenes of last weekend’s jump-up that makes Dennery one of the best carnival venues on the island.

Stan Bishop began his career in journalism in March 2008 writing freelance for The VOICE newspaper for six weeks before being hired as a part-time journalist there when one of the company’s journalists was overseas on assignment.

Although he was initially told that the job would last only two weeks, he was able to demonstrate such high quality work that the company offered him a permanent job before that fortnight was over. Read full bio...
