Rovers United emerged champions of the 2017 Mabouya Valley Promotional Football League finals played at the La Resource playing field on Saturday evening, beating rivals Aux Lyon United.
With a crowd estimated at over 1,200 fans chanting for their respective teams, the scores were locked nil-all at the halftime whistle despite both teams having several scoring opportunities.
Both teams upped in the second half, but Aux Lyon United created a breathtaking scoring opportunity only for Rovers custodian Kerby Gustave to come up with a remarkable save.
Four minutes later, Rovers capitalized on Aux Lyon’s inefficiency as Melvin Skelly made a waltz-type move after receiving a free ball, which he struck past the Aux Lyon goalkeeper to put Rovers up in the 59th minute.
Despite a few late surges by Aux Lyon United for the equalizer, the scoreline remained 1-0 until the final whistle.
Rovers United’s win earned them a ticket to represent Mabouya Valley in the SLFA President’s Cup in a few weeks’ time.
In awards presented, Rovers United received a trophy and gold medals, Aux Lyon United a trophy and silver medals while Kerby Gustave (Rovers United goalkeeper) was MVP, receiving a trophy for his outstanding performance between the uprights.
