ONE match was played in the Clubs Independence Championship at the Vigie Sports Complex on Tuesday evening when St. Joseph’s Convent (SJC) went down to Canaries by a one goal margin in Division 3 action.
The SJC Egrets suffered their first defeat in the competition when they were stunned in flight by a more determined and aggressive Canaries team. There was no loss on this Valentine evening as the team from the west coast with four sisters in their ranks, inclusive of a pair of twins, emulated their Division One team.
The game was evenly poised throughout with the Egrets holding a slender 7-6 lead at the end of the first quarter. However, Canaries outscored their opponents 8-4 to end the half 14-11. They continued their dominance to end the quarter still ahead 18-16.
The final quarter saw SJC Egrets mounting a spirited comeback and though they outscored their opponents 9-6, it was too little too late as they lost by the slenderest of margins 25-24. The Egrets had 46 attempts at goal to their opponents’ 39.
For Canaries, Camila Lansiquot scored 9 from 15 attempts, with Racquel John contributing 16 from 24 attempts.
For the Egrets, Melika Destang netted 16 from 29 attempts, Britney Desir 5 from 11, and Lien Moise 3 from 6 attempts.
