OVER the past two weekends the members of The Kiwanis Club of Castries have been involved in two projects designed to assist the less fortunate in two communities.

In September Kiwanis members attended a church service at the Guesneau Evangelical Church where they worshipped and shared fellowship with church members. The club also distributed approximately forty packages of school supplies to the children in the community.

President of the Kiwanis Club of Castries Louise Vite’ in a short address to the gathering briefly outlined the work of the club over the past years, highlighting some of the major achievements notably the refurbishment of the St. Helene Day Care Centre at George V Park and the Children’s Reading area at the Castries Central Library, outings and hampers for the Elderly Homes, Children’s Christmas parties for underprivileged children and the club’s flagship Primary School Book Project which has spanned over 30 years assisting over 500 students and costing the club in excess of $150,000.

Ms. Vite then presented the school supplies to the children who enthusiastically received them with Pastor Xavier expressing thanks on behalf of the congregation.

Then last Saturday the club embarked on the first phase of assistance to the Lady Gordon Opportunity Centre where they refurbished and repainted the male and female washrooms at the school. In March of this year the Club signed a memorandum of understanding with the school in which it agreed in principle to undertake repairs to playground equipment including the swings and slides, refurbish the toilets, as well as building new lunch tables and benches at a cost of approximately EC$10,000.00.

Principal of the Lady Gordon Opportunity Centre Ms. Linda Preville expressed her thanks to the Club for completing the first phase of the project and reported that the students were elated to see the newly refurbished washrooms when they reported for classes. She stated that they were eagerly looking forward to phase two where the swings, slides and lunch tables will be erected.
