On Wednesday, September 30th, members of the public gathered at the Gros Islet Human Resource Centre for an evening of open, honest conversation about suicide prevention. The town hall meeting was hosted as part of activities to recognize World Suicide Prevention Day, which is observed globally on September 10th. It was organized under the theme “Suicide prevention is everyone’s responsibility.” The forum included a panel discussion with mental health professionals where residents got the opportunity to ask questions, share concerns and learn how to recognize when someone may be struggling and understand where to find help.
The Director of Mental Health Services Dr. Naomi Jn Baptiste explains that a whole of society response is extremely important for suicide prevention and is not solely the responsibility of the Health Sector. “Suicide is preventable. Prevention requires a coordinated public health response that includes early identification and treatment of mental health problems, strengthening social support crisis intervention, support for families and communities, restricting access to highly lethal means, responsible media reporting and improving access to appropriate mental health and social services.”
During his presentation the Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Glensford Joseph provided an important picture of the national suicide statistics for Saint Lucia. “In Saint Lucia the 2014 2023 average annual suicide rate was 5.41 per 100,000 population ranging from a maximum of 8.3 per 100,000 thousand in 2014 to 1.8 per 100,00 thousand in 2021. Evidence demonstrates that through timely evidence based and often low cost interventions many suicides can be prevented consequently strengthening the national capacity for suicide prevention remains a priority for the Ministry of Health, Wellness and Nutrition.”
The Suicide Prevention Town Hall Meeting is part of the Ministry’s wider effort to improve mental health awareness and make sure people know where to turn for help.
