On Saturday, August 31, the Castries East constituency celebrated the academic achievements and potential of its young people at the 18th Annual Honouring Ceremony and Mathematics Quiz, held at the Romanus Lansiquot Human Resources Development Centre in Entrepot.
Under the theme “Investing in Potential; Transforming Communities,” this event continues the longstanding initiative of Prime Minister and Parliamentary Representative for Castries East, Philip J. Pierre.
It aims to recognize achievements, encourage academic excellence, and invest in the educational development of young students attending primary schools in the community. The annual event brought together students from three primary schools within the Castries East constituency: Bishop Charles Gachet Primary School, Bocage Combined School, and Ti Rocher Primary School.
Participants were selected by the principals and Grade 6 teachers of their respective schools to represent them in the competition. The Mathematics Quiz consisted of two rounds, with each participant answering the same five questions in each round.
Following the first round, the three students with the highest scores advanced to the second round to compete for the championship title, second place, and third place. Sirshorn Charles of Bishop Charles Gachet Primary School was crowned the overall winner, with his classmate Juanita Anius taking second place.
Isaac William of Ti Rocher Primary School secured third place. Other participants included Demarcus Dupre from Ti Rocher Primary School and Cjay Auguste from Bocage Combined School. Hasan Al Domini from Bocage Combined School was unable to attend the competition.
The Honouring Ceremony also recognized the top performers from each of the three primary schools for the 2026 CPEA. Sirshorn Charles, with a score of 93%, was acknowledged as Bishop Charles Gachet Primary School’s top performer and will attend Leon Hess Comprehensive Secondary School. Isaac William, Ti Rocher Primary School’s top performer with 89.2%, will also attend Leon Hess Comprehensive Secondary School.
Hasan Al Domini, Bocage Combined School’s top performer with 85%, will attend Castries Comprehensive Secondary School.
This year’s program included innovative segments aimed at inspiring students beyond the competition. The Youth Talent Spotlight featured a performance by Kristian Lawrence of Entrepot, while the NextGen Voices segment saw Dr. Meghan Mangal speak to the students on the topic “New School, New Me… But Still Me: Taking Care of Your Mind.” Amil Octave served as the Guest Speaker, and Attorney-at-Law Shahida Charlemagne-Octave officiated as Mistress of Ceremonies.
The competition was facilitated by Quiz Master Jeanmiel Philip, with Samantha Farrell as Head Judge and Rochel James as Timekeeper.
Philip J. Pierre, the sole sponsor of this initiative, addressed the students with motivational words: “Be positive. Do not engage with those who discourage you; tell them, ‘Wheel and come back again.”
He emphasized the importance of maintaining a positive mindset and encouraged parents to uplift their children instead of discouraging them.
This year’s competition winner reflected this sentiment in a previous interview, stating, “I will win this year,” which he followed through with by securing victory in a tiebreaker round.
Special appreciation was also expressed to Windjammer Landing Villa Beach Resort & Residences, which graciously hosted the young participants and provided them with lunch ahead of the competition.
The 18th Annual Honouring Ceremony and Mathematics Quiz once again showcased a strong commitment to investing in potential, transforming communities, and creating opportunities for the young people in the Castries East community to excel.
