On August 31, the Saint Lucia-Cuba Friendship Association (SLCFA) hosted a tribute to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Fidel Castro’s birth, alongside the 47th anniversary of Saint Lucia-Cuba bilateral relations and the SLCFA’s 21st anniversary.
The event took place at the Finance Administrative Center in Castries and included a moment of silence for Castro, followed by speeches from notable figures, including former Prime Minister Dr. Kenny D. Anthony and Cuba’s Ambassador Yenielys Vilma Reguiferos Linares.
SLCFA President Marlene Alexander highlighted the organization’s efforts over the past two decades, including educational scholarships and support during Cuba’s energy crisis.
Ambassador Linares condemned the longstanding U.S. sanctions against Cuba and noted CARICOM’s consistent support for measures opposing these restrictions for over 34 years.
Dr. Anthony praised Castro’s humanitarian contributions and recalled his personal relationship with the leader. He emphasized Castro’s commitment to addressing energy challenges in the Caribbean, citing initiatives like Petro Caribe and Operation Milagro, which provided affordable energy and eye care to thousands.
The event also featured reflections from Cuba-trained dentist Dr. Kenneth “Kembo” Louisy and former President of the St. Lucia-Cuba Humanistic Solidarity Association Rawle Harvey.
The gathering concluded with recognition of Castro’s significant impact on the region and ongoing solidarity with Cuba.
