Government Engages Fuel Retailers on Retail Margin and Sector Sustainability

Government authorities are taking proactive steps to assist fuel retailers and petroleum dealers in addressing the current retail margins and challenges impacting the industry.

The Department of Labour, Co-operatives and Consumer Affairs, led by Minister Emma Hippolyte, recently initiated discussions with representatives of Saint Lucia’s fuel retailers and petroleum dealers to explore the sustainability of businesses within the sector.

The meeting, convened on August 10, aimed to implement measures that will help sustain the productivity of the petroleum industry.

Stakeholders engaged in a dialogue regarding the potential adjustment of the retail margin, while considering the implications for consumers and the broader cost of living.

A variety of options and solutions were explored during the discussions, with both government and industry representatives acknowledging the necessity of a balanced approach that ensures business viability while protecting consumers from undue increases in living costs.
