As part of the activities to commemorate Breastfeeding Awareness Month, the Vieux Fort Wellness Centre hosted a dedicated Breastfeeding Workshop for mothers and expectant mothers from the community and surrounding areas.
Held under the theme “Breastfeeding for a Sustainable Start in Life: Strengthen What Works,” the workshop aimed to promote and support breastfeeding while providing women with the knowledge and confidence to make informed decisions about infant and young child feeding.
Community Health Nurse at the Vieux Fort Wellness Centre, Junette Joseph, emphasized the workshop’s objectives.
“The workshop aims to provide information and support for expectant mothers, enabling them to initiate and maintain breastfeeding successfully and understand the numerous benefits it offers,” she stated.
The workshop not only provided valuable information but also offered participants practical, hands-on experience. “We designed the workshop to be very interactive; mothers will learn how to properly position their babies and ensure a good latch,” Joseph explained.
Participants were also provided with written demonstrations and brochures to take home, along with gifts. The session included a question-and-answer segment aimed at debunking common myths surrounding breastfeeding.
Nutrition Officer for Regions 4 and 5, Francillia Joseph, highlighted the crucial role of breastfeeding in supporting the healthy growth of infants.
“Breastfeeding is vital worldwide; it offers numerous benefits and plays a significant role in preventing chronic health conditions we face today,” she said. “We advocate for healthy eating habits starting during pregnancy and continuing after delivery to ensure newborns receive proper nutrition, bolstering their immune systems for a healthy future.”
Through events like the Breastfeeding Workshop, the Ministry of Health, Wellness, and Nutrition continues to enhance public awareness and education on the importance of breastfeeding and its impact on the health and well-being of mothers, babies, and families.
