Sir Arthur Lewis Community College welcomed approximately 60 primary and secondary school students for the annual Faces of Development STEAM Camp, continuing a partnership that has spanned more than four years.
The initiative was designed to expose young learners to Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) while broadening their understanding of higher education and future career opportunities.
This year’s programme placed particular emphasis on Mathematics, demonstrating how mathematical thinking underpins everyday problem-solving, innovation and a wide range of professions. Students also participated in presentations and practical sessions in Biology, Theatre Arts and Robotics, highlighting the interdisciplinary nature of STEAM education.
The camp was led by SALCC’s Department of Internationalisation, Advancement and Partnerships, with support from departments across the institution.
Director of Internationalisation, Advancement and Partnerships, Tracy Pilgrim-George, said the longstanding collaboration with Faces of Development continues to create valuable opportunities for young people to discover their potential and broaden their aspirations. She noted that “through activities such as this, students are encouraged to remain curious, recognise their talents and begin thinking about how STEAM subjects can prepare them to contribute to the future development of Saint Lucia.”
Beyond the classroom activities, participants have engaged in interactive games, won prizes and toured the College campus, giving them a first-hand look at tertiary education. The visit also provided opportunities to interact with lecturers and staff, ask questions about academic pathways and gain insight into college life.
