The sporting community of Saint Lucia mourns the passing of renowned cricketer Frederick “Abbas” Thorpe, who made significant contributions to cricket both locally and regionally.

In an online post , Cricket Saint Lucia expresses its deepest condolences to Keith Charlery and Sheldon ‘Marlo’ Thorpe, both former national cricketers and brothers of the late Abbas.

It states , “Our sympathies also extend to the entire Thorpe family and the cricket fraternity of Saint Lucia and the Windward Islands.”

Former Saint Lucia and Windward Islands captain Julian Charles honors Thorpe’s extensive achievements on the field. He emphasizes that Thorpe was the leading batsman for Saint Lucia from 1975 to 1983, during which time he showcased exceptional talent representing Saint Lucia, the Windward Islands, and the Combined Islands with pride

Notably, in 1976, Thorpe made two centuries during the senior Windward Islands Tournament and consistently delivered impressive performances in subsequent years, inspiring younger players across generations.

Affectionately known as ‘Abbas,’ he earned numerous trophies with local clubs including Aussies, New Park, and Lancers, and dominated batting for Central Castries over a decade. His stylish approach to batting, especially his exquisite cover drive, was a hallmark of his game.

In addition to his batting prowess, Thorpe was a medium-fast bowler who frequently opened the bowling and was often the first change bowler for Saint Lucia. His agility in the field, particularly in covers and mid-wicket, further highlighted his dynamic playing style.

As noted, Charles adds, “I had the pleasure of playing alongside him during those formative years. His wit, quick thinking, and encouragement were invaluable to his teammates, establishing him as a strong supporter of both Saint Lucian and West Indies cricket.”

In closing, it is clear that Saint Lucia has lost one of its finest batsmen. Frederick “Abbas” Thorpe’s legacy will endure, and he will be deeply missed.

May his soul rest in eternal peace.
