In a recent statement, the SLMDA expressed its full support for the Chief Pharmacist’s position on the dispensing and administration of GLP-1 receptor agonists such as Semaglutide, marketed as Ozempic or Wegovy, and Tirzepatide, commonly known as Mounjaro or Zepbound.
“These medications are vital tools in the fight against Diabetes and Obesity,” the statement emphasizes. “However, there has been a troubling increase in non-medical professionals advertising the availability of these products in locations that are not licensed pharmacies.”
In light of this concerning trend, the SLMDA urges the public to avoid seeking medical advice and prescription-grade products from unlicensed individuals or entities. These medications should only be prescribed by licensed medical professionals who can provide adequate monitoring and follow-up and should only be purchased from licensed pharmacies.
The SLMDA encourages citizens to exercise caution and protect their health. “Quick, seemingly miraculous fixes are never the answer,” they warn, reiterating their commitment to collaborating with key stakeholders, including the Ministry of Health, the Allied Health Services, the Pharmacy Council, and most importantly, the citizens of Saint Lucia, whose health and well-being they are dedicated to safeguarding.
In conclusion, the SLMDA cautions, “If the pursuit of beauty risks your health and potentially your life, it is simply not worth it.”
