A firestorm is brewing over comments made by talk show host Timothy Poleon concerning a tragic fatal accident in Mac Domel, Laborie on Tuesday February 24th, in which three individuals died including a 4-year-old.

On his talk show News Spin on Tuesday, Poleon announced the breaking news attached with the phrase “the mood is definitely red,” a phrase made popular by the St. Lucia Labour Party (SLP) during the 2025 general election political campaign cycle.

Seemingly the first SLP voice out of the blocks was Parliamentary Representative for Castries Southeast Lisa Jawahir who described the comment as “absolutely disgusting and insensitive.” Jawahir who is also the Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries, Food Security and Climate Change explained in her Facebook post that equating the “political chant” to the “unfortunate loss of life” was an indictment on the journalism profession.

Subsequently, The SLP issued an official release condemning Poleon’s comments, calling for a retraction. The release went on to say that “this was not journalism. This was not commentary. This is cruelty dressed up as content.”

For his part, Poleon took to the airwaves again to address the issue, taking sharp aim at Jawahir, while explaining that his “words have been twisted” and the ensuing firestorm was not his doing but rather that of SLP hacks. He went on to explain that his comment had everything to do with the mood of the people who were waking up to the news of the tragic accident. He suggested that Jawahir was insincere in her outrage and ascribed the word “hypocrite” to those offering condemnation. In reviewing Jawahir’s Facebook post, Poleon was critical of the way the message was constructed, suggesting instead that her criticism of his comment should have been preceded by her comment offering condolences to the family of the deceased.

The issue gained legs on Facebook with numerous comments condemning Poleon comments and at least one accepting and supporting his explanation of the affair. Some have called for an apology while others have suggested Poleon’s removal from the airwaves.
