In his 2026 New Year’s message, Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre asserted that education is the cornerstone for poverty reduction and national transformation, announcing concrete plans to expand smart classrooms.

He extended strong wishes for health, hope, and renewed strength to citizens and families, emphasizing resilience in the face of recent challenges. His message radiated optimism and determination to propel national development, focusing on sustainable progress and inclusive growth.

The address firmly underscored national unity and momentum toward a ‘greater’ island, aligning with broader governance goals.

“As we begin 2026, we must reflect on our achievements and confidently chart the path ahead,” PM Pierre declared.

He highlighted that when the ruling Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP) administration took office in 2021, “Saint Lucia, like the rest of the world, was grappling with significant destruction.

“We confronted unprecedented economic uncertainty, rising global prices, and severe social strain. However, together we chose resilience over despair, unity over division, and ‘people-centred governance’ over interference,” the Prime Minister stated.

“Over the past four years, we have worked diligently to stabilize the economy, protect the most vulnerable, and create opportunities,” he asserted.

Reflecting on recent successes, PM Pierre said that the economy has rebounded and jobs have returned. He affirmed: “Unemployment has dropped to its lowest level, and confidence has been restored. But most importantly, we remain guided by one fundamental principle: Government must serve the people.”

Rejecting notions of “bitterness, hatred, and division,” PM Pierre outlined an ambitious national development agenda centered on healthcare, education, infrastructure, youth empowerment, and economic modernization. He reiterated the people’s demand for stability, compassion, and people-centred governance.

“Your overwhelming choice reflects a shared belief in fairness, inclusion, stability, and progress,” he stated, emphasizing that Saint Lucians are committed to “moving forward together with love and compassion.”

A significant highlight of the Prime Minister’s address was the full commissioning of St Jude Hospital this year, a milestone he proclaimed as a transformative moment for healthcare in the south of the island and for the national health system.

He also announced the initiation of work on the fifth finger of the Owen King EU Hospital, the continued expansion of wellness centres, and the rollout of Universal Health Care.

“These investments are tangible. They save lives, support families, and uphold dignity,” he stressed.

Education will remain the Government’s primary engine for poverty reduction and transformation in 2026, with decisive plans to expand smart classrooms, enhance technical and vocational training, and increase access to early childhood and special education.

Furthermore, he asserted that the government will intensify efforts to improve the Ease of Doing Business, streamline port procedures, promote responsible use of Artificial Intelligence, and implement an unemployment insurance program.

In terms of regional developments, PM Pierre reaffirmed Saint Lucia’s unwavering commitment to CARICOM, diplomacy, and international law, highlighting recent geopolitical disturbances impacting Caribbean air travel, tourism, and trade.

PM Pierre’s administration is resolutely focused on these critical issues:

Economic pressures: global inflation, cost-of-living concerns, and fiscal consolidation efforts.

Education hurdles: enhancing access and quality, bridging the digital divide, and implementing smart classroom initiatives.

Public health and resilience: ensuring post-pandemic recovery, enhancing healthcare access, and preparing for future challenges.

Poverty reduction and inclusive growth: tackling inequality, unemployment, and reinforcing social protection.

National unity and governance: fostering healing after recent events, rebuilding trust in institutions, and advancing regional development.
