The government is taking decisive action to empower breadwinners within families to secure a more sustainable livelihood.

Effective October 2, approximately 600 individuals currently in temporary positions within government and its related departments will transition to full-time employment status.

Minister for Equity and Social Justice, Joachim Henry, announced this pivotal change on Monday, highlighting that many of these workers are involved in the Elderly Care Program under the Saint Lucia Social Development Fund (SSDF).

“These workers have been forced to operate under a temporary status for 11 months each year, only to be required to take one month off to avoid permanent employment,” the minister stated at a media briefing.
“This practice ends now, as they will receive their Letters of Appointment as full-time employees of the SSDF.”

Henry emphasised that while some may view this issue as “trivial,” the previous payment structure severely hindered these individuals’ ability to meet debt obligations and secure loans from credit unions.

Additionally, the new arrangements will provide employees with uniforms and medical treatment, integrated into their salary package.

Minister Henry said that this initiative ensures these dedicated workers can continue their vital role “in caring for our senior citizens,” reinforcing the government’s commitment “to supporting those who serve our communities.”
