The Labour Department on Monday, April 24, successfully launched its 2023 programme of activities to mark the May 1 observance of Labour Day.
Using an unprecedented tripartite approach, the Labour Department is summoning all workers to celebrate the strides made by workers under the theme: “Fundamental Principles and Rights at work”.
Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Department of Labour Mrs. Liota-Charlemagne –Mason noted that Labour Day, marked in the Caribbean on May 1, is a day specially set aside to celebrate the hard work and dedication of employees and their contribution to the economy irrespective of power, position, roles or responsibilities.
“As we pause for the week to celebrate as well as to emphasize the rights and responsibilities of all employees and employers, we encourage you to support the week’s activities which will be outlined later in the programme; as well as, to continue to work with the Department for the benefit of our workers and a harmonious work environment for all,” Liota-Charlemagne said.
Minister for the Public Service, Home Affairs. Labour and Gender Affairs Dr. Virginia Albert-Poyotte noted that government is investing heavily in ensuring that the country can boast of a viable and stable Labour Relations environment.
The overall objective of the week of activities is to highlight the work of the Labour Department, as well as to sensitize the public to be critical on aspects of the Labour Act, such as the freedom of association and the effective recognition of the right to collective bargaining.
There will be a May Day rally on Monday. Then on Wednesday May 03, an Overview of the Employment Unit will be given on NTN. The following Wednesday May 10 an Overview of the Public Work Permit Unit will also be aired on NTN.
