Everybody has a complaint as it relates to what they think should be the Government’s priorities as it relates to needs.
If you are a commuter or vehicle owner, the national cry is potholes and roads. If you were a recent victim of the freak weather occurrence last weekend, the cry would be about flood mitigation, drainage and personal assistance to victims. If you are from the South the cry is about St. Jude Hospital. And if you have just left school, the cry is about the need for job opportunity.
Depending on your disposition, everybody has a view and voice, as well as an opinion. But sadly, the natural and human resources that we have plenty of does not add revenue to the equation. The Government of the day is saddled with recurring expenditure, especially as it relates to paying employees.
Our debts and external commitments stand at an astronomical figure, projected projects and programmes have high cost, especially if we have to comply with global standards and environmental concerns as it relates to global warming and the dreams and aspirations of the population and their demanding attitudes.
A lot of the benefiting commercial sector establishments give little back as in collaborating with government to initiate sustainable project to improve livelihoods, and to top it up, the opposition party ensures that they highlight all the Government’s shortcomings, especially where it relates to commitments made on the campaign trail.
Do not mind the loss of Government revenue, no need to assess the depression and problems that came with the COVID pandemic, forget the new initiatives of school feeding programs, or the reduction or eradication of certain school fees within the education system. Or the introduction of new programmes and additional assets given to the police.
But all that does not seem to matter.
The new laws and strategies to combat criminality, or keeping the city clean, all that seems to be of no concern anymore, some thinking we should just keep borrowing regardless of the mismanagement, bad deals, thefts, bluffs, bad and poor workmanship, and the many foolish decisions made in the past and present, should be no reason to hamper growth.
The amount of revenue lost by the government through absorbing such costs as it relates to cooking gas, or gas as the pumps, all of that means nothing because we elected the Government to solve things.
Wow! What a burden to those who represent, like we want to make bricks out of straw like in Egypt in the era of the Pharoahs.
What a discontented people we have become. Our soul seems to have disappeared in the process.
